Time lapse video of ATLAS cavern during construction.
This shows the cavern in which the ATLAS experiment is being assembled. These images start in October 2003 and end in August 2008. Roughly five years summarised in five minutes! The LHC and ATLAS are due to turn on in September 2008.
Facts:
- 25m diameter, 46m length, weight 7000tonnes
- a total of 100 million channels, connected with 3000 km of cables
the inner detector is a 80 megapixel digital camera with an area of 1.7m2
- floor of the cavern moves about 0.5 mm upwards each year
- data will be recorded at 320MB/s, 200000 times less than the full amount produced
- combined effort of 164 institutions from 35 countries
